How to apply gold leaf foil sheets 8×8 cm
Start with a clean, smooth, dust-free surface. On wood or MDF, apply a base coat of primer or yellow-ochre paint first – this hides any small gaps in the leaf and makes the gold look deeper.
Brush on a thin, even coat of water-based gilding adhesive and wait until it turns tacky rather than wet. This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the adhesive will look slightly milky and feel sticky to a light touch. Applying the leaf too early traps moisture; applying it too late means it will not hold.
Lift one sheet along with its tissue, lay it over the surface and press gently with a soft gilding brush or cotton. Overlap each sheet slightly by 2 to 3 mm so no gaps show. Work in one direction across the surface. Once the whole area is covered and the adhesive has set, brush away the loose flakes with a dry, soft brush. Save these flakes – they are useful for filling small patches later.
Finish with a clear varnish or lacquer. Imitation leaf will darken over time if it is left unsealed, especially in humid weather, so sealing is not optional if you want the shine to last.
You will need our water-based gilding adhesive and a gilding brush set to apply the leaf properly. For larger jobs, the adhesive is also available in 1000 ml bottle and tub packs.
Important – this is imitation leaf, not edible
These gold leaf foil sheets 8×8 cm are imitation gold leaf and are not edible. They are meant for decorative, craft and gilding use only, and must not be used on food, sweets or drinks. If you need gold leaf for mithai, cakes or desserts, please see our 24K pure edible gold leaf, which is genuine gold and FSSAI licensed.
Storage and handling
Store the pack flat in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture and fans. Even a slow ceiling fan will lift and tear the sheets while you work, so switch it off before you open the pack. Handle the leaf with the tissue or a brush rather than bare fingers, as skin moisture makes it stick instantly.
