How to apply Italian gold leaf foil sheets
Brush a thin, even coat of water based gilding glue on the surface and let it turn tacky (about 10 to 15 minutes). Lift one sheet with a dry gilding brush, lay it down, and press gently through the tissue. Once set, dust off the loose bits with a soft brush.
Use our gold leafing glue 100 ml for best results. Kalam brush sets are also available on our store.
Italian gold leaf foil sheets 8×8 cm or a bigger size?
The 8×8 cm size is the most popular choice for Tanjore painting, murti detailing, frames and craft, because a small sheet is easy to lift and control on carving and fine lines. For big flat areas like a ceiling, door or bed back, a larger sheet saves time and gives fewer joints – see our Italian gold leaf 16×16 cm. For regular mandir and murti work many karigars also use our gold leaf foil sheets 14×14 cm.
Tips for a beautiful finish with Italian gold leaf foil sheets
Work in a room without fan or wind, because Italian gold leaf foil sheets are very light and fly away easily. Keep your hands dry and handle the leaf with a brush or the tissue, not with fingers. Lay the sheets with a small overlap so no gap is left, and fill any small cracks with leftover pieces after the glue sets. On wood or plaster, a smooth base coat helps the leaf look brighter.
Imitation leaf can darken over time if left open to air and moisture, so seal the finished work with a clear lacquer. Sealed work keeps its colour and shine for years. You can read more about the traditional craft of gilding and how metal leaf has been used on art and furniture for centuries.
